Abstract

A double blind study was carried out in 46 patients to compare the analgesic effect of intramuscula administration of 20mg nefopam and 50 mg pethidine. Pain intensity was assessed on a 4 point scale and pain relief on a 5 point scale. Patient was rated before and at 30 minutes, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 hours after medication.
The following results were obtained;
1. Both treatment were effective and produced nearly equivalent analgesia.
2. Mean pain relief differed somewhat in that nefopam was slower in onset but produced better relief between 5 and 6 hours.
3. There was no significant difference in adverse effects. Thus the novel analgesic agent nefopam produced analgesia equivalent to pethidine.
